Although the company of animals can reduce stress, neurophysiology and sleep medicine specialist Rybel Wix says that leaving them out of the bedroom is healthier. A veterinarian explains how to protect dogs during a heat wave: “Their thermoregulation is a little different.” Despite the growing trend of sleeping with our dogs or cats, sleep medicine is adamant: sharing a bed with animals is a health mistake that can sabotage rest.
“Es un hábito clínicamente no aconsejable.
"It is a clinically inadvisable habit."
Although it does not pose a direct life-threatening risk to a healthy adult, there are solid neurophysiological and hygienic reasons to avoid it,” explains Dr. Rybel Wix, a specialist in neurophysiology and sleep medicine and a member of the Insomnia Working Group of the Spanish Sleep Society.
Reasons for incompatibility The main problem is sleep fragmentation, “although the person may not be aware of it or achieve complete wakefulness, the noises and movements of the animal generate stimuli that interrupt sleep and reduce the proportion of deep slow-wave sleep (phase N3) and REM sleep,” notes Wix, who points out that the result is non-restorative sleep even if it has lasted eight hours.
Another factor highlighted by the specialist is the incompatibility of biological rhythms.
“Animals do not share the human monophasic sleep pattern; dogs have polyphasic sleep and cats exhibit crepuscular habits, which guarantees activity throughout the early morning,” he explains.
On the other hand, sharing rest also has effects on thermoregulation, according to Wix, which points out that "the body heat radiated by the pet makes it difficult for the core temperature to drop, which the human body needs to consolidate the deep phases of rest."
Finally, the specialist highlights the allergen load associated with the presence of the animal, not only when sharing a bed but even a bedroom.
"The presence of the animal in the immediate breathing environment increases exposure to dander, hair, dust and mites for consecutive hours," he points out.
The trap of emotional comfort. Some people claim that sleeping next to their pet helps them relax, and on this point, the specialist acknowledges that "at a neuroendocrine level, there is evidence that interaction with animals reduces serum cortisol levels and stimulates the release of oxytocin, decreasing the hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system and attenuating anxiety at the beginning of the night."
However, he insists on the importance of distinguishing between the subjective feeling of comfort and the objective quality of sleep: “Although this anxiolytic effect may shorten the sleep onset latency, it does not translate into better quality rest; the awakenings and micro-awakenings caused by the animal throughout the night cancel out this initial benefit.”
For those seeking optimal rest, the most effective preventative measure that Wix provides is "establishing a separate room for the pet, keeping the bedroom door closed at night."
For those cases in which the animal is in a transition or behavioral re-education phase, the specialist recommends strictly adhering to the veterinary guidelines, "both the internal and external deworming schedule, as well as the vaccinations"; maintaining good textile hygiene, with "weekly washing of bedding at temperatures of 60 °C to eliminate allergens and microorganisms"; and good hygiene of the animal, with "daily brushing outside the bedroom and cleaning of paws after the last walk."
The specialist emphasizes that for certain population groups this practice is not only inadvisable, but "is absolutely contraindicated".
“This is the case for patients with sleep disorders, patients with respiratory or allergic conditions, immunocompromised patients, or children and infants,” he explains.
