Remote work in Japan

田中さん、最近テレワークの調子はどうですか。もう一年くらいになりますよね。

Mr. Tanaka, how is remote work going lately? It's already been about a year, hasn't it?

そうですね。正直に言うと、良い面と悪い面がありますね。通勤時間がなくなったのは本当に助かっています。

Yes. To be honest, there are good sides and bad sides. Not having to commute has really been a huge help.

毎日片道一時間半かかっていたので、その時間を自分のために使えるようになったのは大きいです。

It used to take me an hour and a half each way every day, so being able to use that time for myself is a big deal.

それは確かに大きいですね。でも、何か困っていることはありますか。

That really is significant. But is there anything that's been troubling you?

一番困っているのは、仕事とプライベートの切り替えですね。

What troubles me the most is switching between work and private life.

自宅だとどうしても仕事を終わりにするタイミングがつかめなくて、気がついたら夜の九時まで働いていたということがよくあります。

At home, I just can't quite find the right moment to stop working, and before I know it I've been working until nine at night — that happens quite often.

妻にも「もう少しメリハリをつけてほしい」と言われています。

My wife has even told me she'd like me to draw a clearer line between the two.

わかります。私も同じような経験があります。チームとのコミュニケーションはどうですか。

I understand. I've had similar experiences myself. How is communication with your team?

やはりオンラインだけだと限界がありますね。ちょっとした相談や雑談ができなくなったのは残念です。

Well, when it's all online there really are limits. It's a shame that quick consultations and small talk have basically disappeared.

オフィスにいた頃は、廊下で偶然会った同僚とアイデアを交換することがよくあったんですが、今はそういう機会がほとんどありません。

Back when I was in the office, I used to bump into colleagues in the hallway and exchange ideas with them all the time, but now there are almost no opportunities for that.

会社はハイブリッド勤務を検討していないんですか。

Isn't the company considering a hybrid work arrangement?

実は来月から週二回の出社が始まる予定です。最初は面倒だと思っていたんですが、今はむしろ楽しみにしています。

Actually, starting next month I'll be coming in to the office twice a week. At first I thought it would be a hassle, but now I'm actually looking forward to it.

人と直接会って話すことの大切さを改めて実感しています。

I've come to appreciate all over again how important it is to meet people face to face.

それはいいですね。やはりバランスが大事ですよね。

That sounds great. After all, balance really is what matters.

本当にそう思います。完全にどちらか一方というのは、やはり無理がありますね。

I genuinely think so. Going completely one way or the other just doesn't work in the end.
