From Brazil to Japan

I came to Japan from Brazil when I was twelve years old.

My father was going to work at a factory in Aichi Prefecture, so the four of us moved to the city of Toyohashi.

The only Japanese I knew was "ohayou gozaimasu" and "arigatou".

During the first year, the cultural barrier was far higher than the language barrier.

In Brazil it was completely normal to greet friends with a hug, but in Japan that was met with astonishment.

Even when I wanted to eat something different from everyone else during school lunch, I was unsettled by the rule that we had to eat the same thing in the same way as the rest of the class.

It took me years to grasp the concept of "reading the air".

Eventually my Japanese improved and I made friends.

Once I could even use the local dialect, people around me would compliment me by saying "you're almost like a Japanese person now".

Yet I was aware that behind those words lay the implicit premise that I was not, in fact, truly Japanese.

When I returned to Brazil once a year, I gradually began to feel out of place there as well.

Japanese expressions started slipping into my Portuguese, and there were more and more occasions when I could not keep up with what my cousins were talking about.

My mother used to ask me half-jokingly, "which country's child are you, anyway?", but that question kept echoing inside me for a long time.

To live between two cultures is to belong fully to neither. There was a time when I felt this as a deficiency.

Now that I am past thirty, however, I have come to think that it is precisely in this in-between space that my own particular perspective resides.

Being able to look at both cultures from the outside may in fact be something rather precious.
