Hey, Laura, how's the remote work going for you? It's been quite a while since you went to the office, hasn't it?

ねえ、ローラ、在宅勤務はどう？もうずいぶん長いこと、オフィスに行ってないんでしょう？

Yes, since January. At first I loved it. I saved almost two hours of commuting a day and I could organise my time however I wanted.

うん、一月から。最初は本当に気に入っていたの。通勤に一日でほぼ二時間節約できて、自分の時間を好きなように組めたから。

But as the months have gone by, things have changed quite a bit.

でも、何ヶ月も経つうちに、状況がかなり変わってきたんだ。

Well, to begin with, I find it really hard to separate work from my personal life. Since the computer is always there, in the living room, I end up answering emails at ten at night.

まず、仕事とプライベートを分けるのがとても難しいの。パソコンがずっとリビングにあるから、結局夜の十時にメールに返信してしまう。

My partner has already told me several times that I need to set boundaries.

パートナーには、もうきちんと境界線を引かないとだめだって何度も言われてる。

That happens to a lot of people. And how is communication with the team going?

それは多くの人に起きていることだよ。チームとのコミュニケーションはどう？

That's where you notice it most. At the office, you could sort out any question in two minutes by walking over to someone's desk.

そこが一番感じるところね。オフィスにいたら、誰かのデスクに行けば、どんな質問でも二分で解決できた。

Now everything is by message or video call, and sometimes it takes hours to get a reply. Plus, you lose that social side that I used to really enjoy.

今は全部メッセージかビデオ通話で、返事をもらうのに何時間もかかることもある。それに、私が好きだったあの社交的な面が失われてしまうの。

And hasn't your company considered a hybrid model?

会社はハイブリッド型のモデルを検討していないの？

They're looking into it, but there's nothing concrete yet. What they have done is rent a coworking space for those who want to go in a couple of days a week.

検討中だけど、まだ具体的なものは何もないの。やってくれたのは、週に二日くらい行きたい人のためにコワーキングスペースを借りてくれたこと。

I've started going on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and honestly I can tell the difference.

私は火曜日と木曜日に行き始めたんだけど、正直、違いを感じるよ。

I'm glad. I think the future lies in finding a balance. Neither entirely at home nor entirely at the office.

Absolutely. The important thing is that each person can choose what works best for them.
