Living greener in Japan

Last summer, my daughter came home from school and asked me, "Dad, why does our family have so much plastic waste?" That single question prompted our family to take a hard look at our lifestyle.

The first thing we changed was the way we shopped.

We used to take a plastic bag every time we went to the convenience store or supermarket, but now we always carry a reusable shopping bag.

We also stopped buying drinks in plastic bottles and started bringing our own water bottles instead.

Our eating habits gradually changed as well.

We used to rely on ready-made bento boxes and microwave meals, using our busy schedules as an excuse, but now we cook for ourselves three or four times a week.

Since we began buying vegetables directly from a local farmer, we have rediscovered just how good seasonal produce can taste.

The hardest part has been changing how we use the car. Public transport in our area is limited, so giving up the car entirely is not realistic.

Still, we now cycle to the local shops, and we carpool with colleagues more often than before.

People around us sometimes say, "You really don't need to go that far." But we are not chasing perfection.

What matters, I believe, is paying attention to the small choices we make every day.

Each person's actions may seem small, but if everyone changes just a little, together it can become a powerful force.
