I was nine years old when my parents announced that we were leaving for France. I remember the weight of that sentence, even though I did not yet understand what it implied.

Leaving Tunis was not merely changing geography — it meant unlearning one way of being in order to acquire another, slowly, painfully.

The first year was the hardest.

I spoke French well enough to follow lessons in class, but not well enough to grasp a joke or to navigate the unspoken codes of a schoolyard in Marseille.

I quickly understood that integration did not depend on language alone. You had to know which football team to support, which TV shows to watch. One day, I brought makroud for snack-time.

Nobody said anything unkind, but the silence was eloquent.

With time, I adapted. I started watching the same series, supporting Olympique de Marseille. My accent softened.

My parents noticed it without saying a word, although I could see something waver in my mother's eyes whenever I answered her Arabic in French.

What is strange about growing up between two cultures is that you never feel entirely at home in either of them.

In France, I remain subtly foreign — a first name people hesitate over, an accent that resurfaces when I am tired.

In Tunis, I am the one who left, who speaks Arabic with the wrong rhythm, who no longer understands certain references.

For a long time, I experienced this as a loss. Today, I see things differently. The in-between is a place in itself.

Uncomfortable, certainly, but it offers a perspective that those rooted in a single culture rarely have — the capacity to perceive strangeness in what others consider normal.
