De Marrocos a Roterdão

I was nine when my parents decided to move from Morocco to the Netherlands.

My father had found work in a factory in Rotterdam, and my mother was convinced that we — my little sister and I — would get better opportunities here.

She was right, but she had not mentioned what it would cost.

The first months were overwhelming. I did not speak a word of Dutch and was seated at school next to a girl who had been assigned to help me.

She did so dutifully but without warmth.

I quickly learned that kindness worked differently here than at home — less exuberant, more at a distance, but not necessarily less sincere.

After a year I spoke fluently enough to join in, but joining in is not the same as belonging.

Subtle signals kept reminding me that I was different: the way people pronounced my name, the surprise when I used a Rotterdam word, the question that always came back — "but where are you really from?"

At the same time, my relationship with Morocco was changing. With each visit I noticed that I had become more of a spectator and less of a participant. My Arabic grew stiffer, my frame of reference shifted.

My cousins called me "the Dutch one" with a mixture of admiration and distance.

It took years before I understood that identity is not a choice between one or the other. You can carry two worlds within you without swearing full allegiance to either.

That in-between space sometimes feels lonely, but it also offers something valuable: the ability to see the self-evident truths of both cultures for what they are — conventions, not truths.
