Between two worlds

I was eleven when my parents told me we were moving to England. I remember the weight of that sentence, though I couldn't yet understand what it meant.

Leaving Lahore wasn't just about geography — it was about unlearning one way of being and slowly, painfully, acquiring another.

El primer año fue el más duro.

The first year was the hardest.

I spoke English well enough to pass exams but not well enough to catch a joke or navigate the unspoken rules of a school playground.

I learned quickly that belonging wasn't just about language.

It was about knowing which football team to support, which television shows to reference, which kind of sandwich to bring in your lunchbox.

I brought paratha once. Nobody said anything cruel, but the silence was loud enough.

Over time, I adapted. I started watching the same programmes, supporting the same team. My accent softened.

My parents noticed and said nothing, though I could see something flicker behind my mother's eyes whenever I replied to her Urdu in English.

The strange thing about growing up between two cultures is that you never feel entirely at home in either.

In England, I am always subtly foreign — an accent that resurfaces when I'm tired, a name that people hesitate over.

In Lahore, I am the one who left, who speaks Urdu with the wrong rhythm, who doesn't quite understand the references anymore.

I used to think of this as a loss. Now I see it differently. The in-between is its own place.

It is uncomfortable, yes, but it offers a perspective that people rooted in a single culture rarely access — the ability to see the strangeness in what others consider normal.
