Small changes, big difference

El verano pasado, mi mujer y yo decidimos cambiar nuestros hábitos de consumo.

Last summer, my wife and I decided to change our consumption habits.

Llevábamos años leyendo artículos sobre la crisis climática, pero el tema seguía siendo abstracto, como un problema que en realidad no nos concernía.

We had been reading articles about the climate crisis for years, but the subject remained abstract, like a problem that didn't really concern us.

Entonces nuestra hija volvió un día del colegio y nos preguntó por qué tirábamos tantos envases de plástico. Esa pregunta se me quedó grabada.

Then our daughter came home from school one evening and asked us why we threw away so much plastic packaging. That question stayed with me.

Empezamos por lo más sencillo. Comenzamos a hacer la compra en el mercado de Belleville en lugar de en el supermercado, llevando nuestras propias bolsas de tela y nuestros tarros de cristal.

We started with the easiest things. We began doing our shopping at the Belleville market rather than at the supermarket, bringing our own cloth bags and glass jars.

Al principio parecía insignificante, pero al cabo de un mes nuestro cubo de basura estaba visiblemente menos lleno.

At first, it seemed trivial, but after a month, our rubbish bin was visibly less full.

Lo más difícil fue cambiar nuestra alimentación. Teníamos la costumbre de comprar platos preparados por comodidad después de largas jornadas de trabajo.

The hardest thing was changing our diet. We were used to buying ready-made meals out of convenience after long workdays.

Ahora cocinamos nosotros mismos al menos cuatro noches por semana, con verduras de temporada compradas a un hortelano del barrio.

Now, we cook ourselves at least four evenings a week, with seasonal vegetables bought from a local market gardener.

Lleva más tiempo, pero las comidas son mejores e incluso gastamos un poco menos.

It takes more time, but the meals are better and we even spend a little less.

El verdadero reto, sin embargo, es el transporte. Vivimos a veinte kilómetros de París, y el tren de cercanías llega a menudo con retraso o va abarrotado.

The real challenge, however, is transport. We live twenty kilometres from Paris, and the suburban train is often late or packed.

Prescindir totalmente del coche no es realista, pero hemos empezado a coger la bici para los trayectos cortos y a compartir coche con los vecinos.

Doing without the car completely isn't realistic, but we've started taking the bike for short trips and carpooling with the neighbours.

Algunos de nuestros amigos piensan que exageramos. Uno de ellos bromeó diciendo que acabaríamos viviendo en una yurta. Pero no buscamos la perfección.

Some of our friends think we're overdoing it. One of them joked that we would end up living in a yurt. But we're not looking for perfection.

Sabemos que los gestos individuales no bastarán para resolver la crisis climática.

We know that individual actions won't be enough to solve the climate crisis.

What we're trying to build are sustainable habits, not just for the planet, but for our daily life.
