A greener way of life

El año pasado mi mujer y yo decidimos empezar a vivir de forma más consciente.

Last year my wife and I decided to start living more consciously.

En realidad todo empezó con nuestro hijo, que tenía un proyecto del colegio sobre la contaminación por plásticos.

It actually began with our son, who had a school project on plastic pollution.

Nos enseñó fotos de playas llenas de basura, y aquello nos afectó profundamente.

He showed us photos of beaches full of rubbish, and that really affected us deeply.

Empezamos con pequeños pasos. Compramos bolsas reutilizables y dejamos de comprar agua embotellada.

We started with small steps. We bought reusable bags and stopped buying bottled water.

En su lugar, ahora llenamos una botella en casa y la llevamos a todas partes.

Instead, we now fill a bottle at home and take it with us everywhere.

Suena sencillo, pero al cabo de un mes ya notamos que nuestra bolsa de basura estaba mucho menos llena.

It sounds simple, but after a month we already noticed that our rubbish bag was a lot less full.

Lo más difícil fue cambiar nuestros hábitos alimentarios. Estábamos acostumbrados a comprar comidas preparadas porque después del trabajo no nos apetecía cocinar.

The hardest part was changing our eating habits. We were used to buying ready meals because we did not feel like cooking after work.

Ahora intentamos cocinar nosotros mismos al menos cuatro veces por semana, con verduras de temporada de una granja cercana.

Now we try to cook ourselves at least four times a week, with seasonal vegetables from a farm nearby.

Cuesta más tiempo, pero la comida sabe mejor y además sale más barata.

It takes more time, but the food tastes better and it is also cheaper.

El transporte sigue siendo el punto más complicado. Vivimos a quince kilómetros del centro, y el transporte público en nuestro barrio no es fiable.

Transport remains the trickiest point. We live fifteen kilometres from the centre, and the public transport in our area is unreliable.

Renunciar al coche por completo simplemente no es viable.

Giving up the car completely is simply not feasible.

Pero para distancias cortas ahora cogemos la bici, y compartimos coche con los vecinos más a menudo para ir a la ciudad.

But for short distances we now take the bike, and we more often share rides with neighbours into town.

Algunos amigos opinan que estamos exagerando. Pero no intentamos ser perfectos. Sabemos que las acciones individuales por sí solas no van a resolver el problema del clima.

Some friends think we are exaggerating. But we are not trying to be perfect. We know that individual actions alone will not solve the climate problem.

Lo que sí intentamos es construir hábitos que podamos mantener — no solo por el medio ambiente, sino también por nuestra vida cotidiana.

What we are trying to do is build habits that we can keep up — not only for the environment, but also for our daily life.
