Small changes, big impact

El verano pasado mi mujer y yo decidimos cambiar nuestra forma de vivir.

Last summer my wife and I decided to change the way we live.

Durante años habíamos leído artículos sobre la crisis ambiental, pero siempre nos parecía un problema de otros.

For years we had read articles about the environmental crisis, but it always seemed like somebody else's problem.

Entonces nuestro hijo volvió del colegio y nos preguntó por qué usábamos tantas botellas de plástico. Aquella pregunta se me quedó en la cabeza.

Then our son came home from school and asked us why we used so many plastic bottles. That question stayed in my head.

Empezamos por las cosas sencillas. Dejamos de comprar agua embotellada e instalamos un filtro en el grifo. Sustituimos las bolsas de plástico por bolsas reutilizables.

We started with the simple things. We stopped buying bottled water and installed a tap filter. We replaced plastic bags with reusable bags.

Parecían gestos insignificantes, pero en un mes el cubo de la basura estaba visiblemente menos lleno.

They seemed like insignificant gestures, but within a month the rubbish bin was visibly less full.

La parte más difícil fue cambiar los hábitos alimentarios. Antes comprábamos muchos platos preparados porque después de una jornada de trabajo eran cómodos.

The hardest part was changing our eating habits. Before, we used to buy lots of ready meals because they were convenient after a day of work.

Ahora cocinamos desde cero al menos cuatro veces a la semana, usando verduras de temporada del mercado de Testaccio.

Now we cook from scratch at least four times a week, using seasonal vegetables from the local market in Testaccio.

Lleva más tiempo, pero la comida es mejor y al final ahorramos.

It takes more time, but the food is better and in the end we save money.

El mayor reto, sin embargo, ha sido el transporte. Vivimos a quince kilómetros del centro de Roma y el transporte público en nuestra zona no es fiable.

The biggest challenge, however, has been transport. We live fifteen kilometres from the centre of Rome and the public transport in our area is unreliable.

Renunciar al coche del todo no es realista, pero hemos empezado a usar la bicicleta para los trayectos cortos y a compartir viajes con los vecinos.

Giving up the car completely is not realistic, but we have started using the bicycle for short journeys and sharing rides with the neighbours.

Algunos amigos se ríen de nosotros. Uno bromeó diciendo que el año que viene viviremos en una cueva. Pero nosotros no buscamos la perfección.

Some friends tease us. One joked that next year we will be living in a cave. But we are not looking for perfection.

Sabemos que las acciones individuales por sí solas no resolverán la crisis climática.

We know that individual actions alone will not solve the climate crisis.

Lo que intentamos hacer es construir hábitos que sean sostenibles no solo para el planeta, sino para nuestra vida cotidiana.

What we are trying to do is build habits that are sustainable not only for the planet, but for our daily life.
